Abstract/ Concluding Remarks: | In view of the rising crime rate in Hong Kong, the Sub-committee on the social causes of crime commissioned the Social Research Center of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in early December 1973 to conduct a research project to investigate into the social conditions and factors that precipitate or contribute to the incidence of juvenile delinquency in Hong Kong. As it has been ten months since the commencement of the project, the research team wishes to inform the Sub-Committee the progress of this project. However, it has to be clarified that this preliminary report will only include a brief outline of the research problem and procedures, and will present some of the data collected from the “experimental” (i.e., offenders) group. We shall discuss in detail the research procedures and compare the finding s of the experimental group with the “control” (i.e., non-offenders) group, in the final report. Since factors that contribute to the incidence of juvenile delinquency may be many, it is necessary to make the scope of this study more manageable. The present study will focus on social conditions rather than biological and psychological characteristics. To be more specific, the research goal is to gather facts about the socio-economic background of the juvenile offenders and through these to reveal the “social causes” of their deviant behaviour in terms of the following categories of social factors: 1) Basic personal characteristics 2) Family situation 3) Living and neighboring environment 4) Educational background and schooling adjustment 5) Attachment to peers 6) Leisure activities and exposure to mass media 7) Work experience Social attitudes and beliefs |
